FRIDAY DEBATE: Khune Or Petersen In Goal For Chiefs?

FRIDAY DEBATE: Khune Or Petersen In Goal For Chiefs?

Itumeleng Khune and Brandon Petersen of Kaizer Chiefs warm up before the DStv Premiership 2023/24 game between Stellenbosch FC and Kaizer Chiefs at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on 30 August 2023

It's still early in the season and Kaizer Chiefs have not had the smoothest of starts, so this week's Friday debate asks Amakhosi supporters who they prefer in goal between Brandon Petersen and Itumeleng Khune.

Petersen has played all but one of the matches for Amakhosi this season, wearing the captain's armband in the process, but has come in for criticism with errors that have led to opposition goals. There's also Bruce Bvuma as an option for Molefi Ntseki, but who should really start?

I think a season or two ago, I am not record saying that it's time for Itu rest and for the younger goalkeepers to take over. I thought Petersen and Bruce could fight for the number one jersey. But, having watched the games after that, I think I don't feel safe in any of those two and it's not okay to feel that way. You need to feel safe that goalkeepers can win games for you and win championships for you. Personally, if people are not ready to step up, I would go back towards the tried and tested (Khune). We know what he is capable of. Yes, he has been conceding when given a chance, but I think if we can be consistent with him, he can give us more stability and confidence at the back. If you have a goalkeeper who gives you confidence, that's minus one problem. It means going forward, you can be more adventurous and you can be more organised, knowing that if they go past you, at least the goalkeeper can pull a save. My issue with Petersen is conceding goals at the near post and silly goals and giving away goals. We've seen create goals for the opponents. I don't think Bruce is willing to step up. He does not seem to want it that bad. When he plays, he does not improve in those things I know he is weak at, like handling. So, Khune for me. I am more comfortable with Khune is goal. He is less erratic. We can't continue with guys who will cost us games week in and week out.

I think I prefer Brandon because the club announced that Khune will not be there next season in the goalkeeping department. With Brandon having kept a lot of clean sheets this season and settling in well with the likes of (Thatayaone) Ditlhokwe, I think it will definitely be a good thing. I think it should be between him and Bruce (Bvuma) because Bruce is someone we can stay will still be there (beyond the end of the season. I think the transition period of Khune going to occupy other positions within the club structures would pan out well, compared to him playing every week while we know that next season he won't be there. It's a matter of continuity. I think Brandon or Bruce would be a much more solid relationship with the defence, even come next season. I'll lean towards Brandon Petersen and Khune can get a couple of games here and there, but not as our number one goalkeeper because we still need to plan for the future, which is very important.

Join the debate and let us know who you think should be in goal for Chiefs!
