The Dutchman capped off a memorable 2019 after lifting the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup on Saturday night after defeating Flamengo 1-0 in Qatar.
Van Dijk has now claimed the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup in one season but those achievements were not enough to earn him a Ballon d'Or title, as Messi went on to claim his sixth crown.
"I was slightly disappointed," the defender said, as per the Mirror.
"I decided I would still go to the ceremony – and, in the end, it was a super night.
"I still consider it a great achievement to be up there with the biggest football icons in the world.
"I spoke to Messi during the evening. It was not the longest conversation because he doesn't speak a lot of English.
"But it was still enough to make me realise that the respect between us now also runs the other way."
