Result: Sekhukhune United 1-1 Stellenbosch

Date: 11 September 2021

Venue: Emirates Airline Park

Stellies coach Steve Barker made just one change from their win over TS Galaxy before the FIFA break as Sage Stephens replaced Lee Langeveldt in goal.

The men from the Western Cape got off to the perfect start when Junior Mendieta broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season after seven minutes.

The hosts looked to get themselves back on level terms midway through the first half when Yusuf Maart's corner found Tumelo Matona in the box, but the midfielder headed wide of the mark.

The newly-promoted side did have a couple sights at goal in the latter stages of the first half, but Stellies did well to keep their lead intact heading to the interval.

Sekhukhune coach MacDonald Makhubedu opted for a change at the start of the second half as Cheslyn Jampies made way for Nkanyiso Madonsela.

Matona went close for Babina Noko just before the hour mark with a powerful effort that forced the Stellies shot-stopper into a fine save, while Motsepe headed wide of the target minutes later.

However, Sekhukhune got their reward on 68 minutes thanks to Nigerian striker Chibuike Ohizu who has now taken his tally to three league goals for the season.

Both sides threw bodies forward in search of a winning goal in the closing stages, but neither were able to find the breakthrough as the spoils were shared on the day.
