The Betway Premiership took centre stage this past weekend with Orlando Pirates avenging their recent 4-1 loss against log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, with a 2-1 win at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A brace from Relebohile Mofokeng caught Sundowns by surprise, as they found themselves two goals behind just five minutes into the game. Coach Jose Riveiro's charges looked set to score more but it was coach Miguel Cardoso's team that found the back of the net in the second half, from a brilliant first touch and finish from Khuliso Mudau, who timed his run perfectly behind Bucs' defence to slot home, beating Sipho Chaine hands down. Chaine's opposite number, Ronwen Williams, had a relatively quiet second half as Downs tried all they could to get back into the game, with Bucs' defence holding steady as they saw the game off.
Stellenbosch FC bounced back to winning ways when they spoiled Sekhukhune United's party with a 2-1 win at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon. This was new coach, Eric Tinkler's second game in charge of Babina Noko after taking over from coach Lehlohonolo Seema and he made an immediate impact by beating Marumo Gallants 2-1 during the week. Stellies had to respond following their 3-1 Nedbank Cup loss against Kaizer Chiefs and playing to a goalless draw against Pirates on Tuesday night. Lesiba Nku and Thato Khiba found the back of the net for coach Steve Barker's side with Chibuike Ohizu scoring what turned out to be a consolation goal for United.
Kaizer Chiefs visited Richards Bay FC at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon and left KZN empty-handed, as coach Ronnie Gabriel gave them a 2-0 lesson, putting more pressure on coach Nasreddine Nabi whom a lot was expected from. Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first half until Fezile Gcaba found the back of the net in the 48th minute before Yamela Mbuthuma put the final nail on the coffin in the 72nd minute. Chiefs have now collected 29 points from 22 games with eight wins, five draws and nine losses. The Natal Rich Boys eased their relegation worries with the three points as they moved up to 11th on the log
Chippa United added salt into Polokwane City's wound when they inflicted them with a 2-0 loss at Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday afternoon, to continue City's winless streak. Coach Thabo September's charges are sitting ninth on the log, four points behind Chiefs, with two games in hand and they will fancy their chances of making the Top Eight. After starting the season so well, continuously maintaining a spot among the top four teams in the league, coach Phuti Mohafe's side has hit a dry spell with wins hard to come by. They've subsequently slipped to sixth on the log.
Cape Town City lost 1-0 to Marumo Gallants at Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Gabadinho Mhango scored the only goal of the match to take all three points from coach Muhsin Ertugral's team.
Magesi FC recorded another important victory against Golden Arrows, beating them 1-0 at Seshego Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Lehlegonolo Mokone scored the solitary goal for coach Owen Da Gama's side to move up the log to 12th.
