What Is The Macufe Cup?

What Is The Macufe Cup?

The Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) is celebrating its 16th year of existence from 5 to 14 October. The Macufe Cup featuring Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic is a major part of the festival.

In a thrilling clash last season, Celtic edged a high scoring encounter 4-3 and Chiefs will no doubt be out for a measure of revenge.

Launched in 1997 by the Free State Provincial Government to celebrate some of the best local and international African artists in various disciplines, the Macufe Festival has grown from strength to strength over the years.

The event is said to attract an audience of over 140 000 people, making it one of the biggest cultural festivals on the African continent.

While the Macufe Cup final between Chiefs and Celtic is viewed as a friendly, the contest has often been far from that over the years.

The match often attracts massive support and the game is a platform to give young players a chance to prove themselves.

Chiefs' coach, Stuart Baxter, recently confirmed he would possibly play the likes of Lorenzo Gordinho and new signing, Ivan Bukenya. Meanwhile, Celtic will want to build some confidence after a very poor start to the season saw Clinton Larsen handing in his resignation.

Former Celtic star and current Chiefs defender, Eric Mathoho, is also hopeful of facing his old club.
