AmaZulu confirmed that the club's former players, Siyabonga Mkhwanazi and Bafo Biyela were honoured posthumously this past weekend.
"Two fallen AmaZulu heroes, Siyabonga Mkhwanazi and Bafo Biyela, were honoured this past weekend in the form of a 16-team football spectacle at the University of Zululand, where the late duo began their road to professional football.
"A crowd of more than 200 football lovers and KwaDlangezwa residents came out in full force to witness the tournament, which was held in memory of the Empangeni-born players who donned the Usuthu green and white jersey with pride.
"Midfield ace Bafo 'King' Biyela passed away on 17 September 2012 while Siyabonga 'Benni' Mkhwanazi, who was loved for his burly presence as a striker, died on 12 September 2008.
"The tournament was put together by the local Sports Recreation department and the University of Zululand in partnership with former AmaZulu and current Bidvest Wits defender, S'boniso Gumede, along with close friends.
"Eshowe United beat New Heroes 1-0 in the final to claim the R16 000 prize money which was up for grabs. AmaZulu U17s played the local U19 squad in a curtain raiser towards the semi-finals. The young Usuthu won the match 1-0.
"In a heart-warming display of salute to the late players, their former teammates whom they once played with for local club, Chess FC, and other amateur outfits played an honorary match.
"AmaZulu Supporters Coordinator Hazel Makhanya presented a framed jersey to the Biyela and Mkhwanazi families as a form of remembrance from the club," amazulufc.net revealed.
