PSL Confirms Circumstances Surrounding Zondi’s Tragic Death

Durban City

The Premier Soccer League has officially confirmed the heartbreaking news of the passing of Durban City Football Club player, Sinamandla Zondi, who tragically collapsed and died shortly before his team’s Motsepe Foundation Championship match against Milford on Tuesday evening.

Known affectionately as “Sgora” by those close to him, Zondi was set to play in the fixture at Chatsworth Stadium when he suddenly collapsed during the pre-match proceedings. According to the PSL’s statement, medical personnel at the venue responded immediately and rushed the player to Chatsmed Garden Hospital.

Despite efforts to revive him, Zondi was pronounced dead shortly before 8pm.

In response to the devastating news, the league suspended the match out of respect for the player and his grieving teammates.

The PSL revealed that Durban City were offered the option to postpone their upcoming fixture but have made the courageous decision to play their next match as planned this Friday, in what is expected to be an emotionally charged occasion.  

The PSL issued the following statement:  

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) received the devastating news of the passing of Durban City Football Club player Sinamandla Zondi, late yesterday.  

Affectionately known as “Sgora”, Zondi was due to feature in a Motsepe Foundation Championship fixture against Milford United FC at Chatsworth Stadium, scheduled for 19h30.  

According to the information provided to the League:

 

  1. Shortly before the match began, Sinamandla collapsed and was immediately attended to by medical personnel on site.

 

  1. Given the seriousness of his condition, he was rushed to Chatsmed Garden Hospital.

 

  1. Sadly, he passed away at the hospital shortly before 20h00.

Upon confirmation of the tragic news, last night’s match was suspended. The club was offered an opportunity to postpone their upcoming match, but they have opted to play their scheduled fixture this Friday.  

The PSL extends its heartfelt condolences to the Zondi family, his loved ones, and everyone at Durban City Football Club during this profoundly difficult time.  

In honour of his memory, a moment of silence will be observed at all Motsepe Foundation Championship, Betway Premiership and DStv Diski Challenge fixtures this week. 

May his soul repose peacefully.

The local football community has since been rocked by the news, with tributes pouring in on social media from clubs, players, and fans across the country.  

Zondi was regarded as a rising star within the Motsepe Foundation Championship, admired not only for his skills on the pitch but for his humility and team spirit off it.

 

The PSL has also confirmed that grief counselling and support have been made available to Durban City players and staff to help them process the tragedy.
