Crucial Maswanganyi Update After Injury Setback

Crucial Maswanganyi Update After Injury Setback

Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi could be set for a return following an injury that recently halted his progress.

The playmaker was forced to withdraw from the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with Polokwane City's Ndamulelo Maphangule taking his place – a move that left national team head coach Hugo Broos frustrated, as he claimed he should have been informed earlier about Maswanganyi's injury.

The 26-year-old had already missed a crucial fixture for the Buccaneers before the international break – the 2-1 Betway Premiership victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium.

His absence was a blow for Pirates, as he has been one of the team's most influential players this season.

According to sources close to the Pirates camp, Maswanganyi has made significant progress in his recovery.

While his return is not yet guaranteed, there is a possibility that he will undergo a late fitness test ahead of the team's next match – a highly anticipated CAF Champions League quarter-final clash against Algerian side MC Alger.

"There is progress in his situation, and there is a possibility that he may return," said the source.
