Middendorp Bounces Back With New Job In Ethiopia

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has landed a new job abroad.

The German mentor parted company with the Glamour Boys last month after a season and a half in charge, and unfortunately missing out on the Absa Premiership league title despite Amakhosi leading from very much the start of the 2019/20 season.

Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned champions on the last day instead.

He had one more year left on his Chiefs contract before the club announced it had taken the decision to allow Middendorp, and his assistant Shaun Bartlett, to move on.

The Siya crew understands the coach has agreed to take over Ethiopian giants Saint George, meaning he jumps straight back into the dugout.

Middendorp was being courted by Ajax Cape Town for several weeks and a move to the Urban Warriors looked likely, but their failure to gain promotion to the topflight and the break up with parent club Ajax Amsterdam, which led to the team being renamed Cape Town Spurs, meant that proposition was now off the table.

Middendorp, 61, is a known workaholic and the opportunity to start a new project in the Ethiopian Premier League was too inciting for him to be idle while something else in the local league came about.

Gavin Hunt replaced him as the new Chiefs coach.
