A PSL defender is among players who were left stranded at an airport for hours ahead of their crucial match which is scheduled for tonight (Monday).
With Gabon scheduled to take on Gambia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this evening, Maritzburg United midfielder Nathanael Mbourou is currently with the team along with his Arsenal superstar teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
According to reports, the Gabon national team arrived at the Banjul International Airport in Gambia after 11pm on Sunday night but the players were forced to spend the night on the floor until around 6am on Monday morning, before finally proceeding to a hotel in a bus.
It has been reported that Gambia authorities allegedly demanded that Gabon conducted new Covid-19 tests, even though they had already submitted their results well in advance and on time.
Mbourou, who was announced as a new signing for the Team of Choice in August, has started in three matches and came off the bench in the other of the four matches in all competitions for the Pietermaritzburg outfit and is looking forward to helping his team qualify for AFCON.
Denis Bouanga and Aubameyang scored the goals as Gabon beat Gambia 2-1 in Franceville on Thursday.
"Thank you to all of you who have been our team Les Panthers du Gabon. We were odd yesterday because you weren't in the stands following the global Covid-19 pandemic that is raging us all. Despite this, you haven't let us down. Once again, a big THANK YOU to all!!! Next appointment Monday 16 in The Gambia. All like yesterday, with the same patriotic and positive mind, let's be wired... Gabon WINS!!!!" Mbourou wrote on his Facebook account after Thursday's match.
