Could Makhaula Follow In Footsteps Of Pirates Legends?

Makhehleni Makhaula could be set for the history books with Orlando Pirates as he continues to impress with his performances and contribution to the club.

This season, Makhaula has raised his hand as one of the most influential players for the Buccaneers with his notable contributions in the PSL and CAF Champions League.

The experienced midfielder has an impressive 26 appearances across all competitions so far this season and has collected a few Man of the Match awards along the way to cap off his amazing campaign.

Against Sekhukhune United last night, Makhaula was the scorer of the second goal as Bucs emerged as 2-1 winners and he had been outstanding throughout the match.

The veteran midfielder was awarded the Man of the Match accolade, continuing from where he left off last weekend against Kaizer Chiefs where he was also voted as the best player on the field.

With the Kagiso-born player expected to put pen to paper on a new contract at the Soweto giants, as his current deal which he signed as an extension at the end of last season is set to expire in June, he could then be set for a long-term future with the club, according to sources.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro speaks highly of the midfield strongman, and it looks likely the ex-AmaZulu man will continue being a regular for long under him.

"What I can tell you is that he (Makhaula) is most likely to stay beyond the current season. Whether he will be getting another one-year (contract extension) or a different deal doesn't matter, but you can expect him to be at the club next season," said the source.

The source didn't rule out the possibility of Makhaula, who will be turning 36 later this year, following in the footsteps of legends like Wayne Sandilands and Siyabonga Mpontshane who retired at Bucs after serving the club with distinction.

"If it's got to get there, why not? But we shouldn't be focusing on his age at this stage, but on what he can do on the field, and at the moment he is enjoying his football. He was the oldest player on the field in the (Soweto) derby but look at what he did in terms of his performance, and he was even Man of the Match," the insider concluded.
