Mamelodi Sundowns missed out on a spot in the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup final after losing to Richards Bay FC on Saturday afternoon.
The Brazilians went with the tried and tested, as Reyaad Pieterse, Mosa Lebusa, Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena and Thapelo Morena were the only changes from the team that beat Marumo Gallants in the final of the Nedbank Cup.
The GladAfrica Championship winners, meanwhile, handed starts to new signings Sibusiso Mthethwa, Sanele Barns and goalkeeper Omar Salim Magoola.
Sundowns were put under pressure in the early stages as the Natal Rich Boyz had a one-on-one opportunity but Pieterse rescued the situation with a crucial save.
However, Masandawana quickly got into their stride as Teboho Mokoena came close to breaking the deadlock from a rebound but his shot was cleared off the line.
The Brazilians remained on the front foot in the latter part of the first stanza as Maema had a shot that came off the upright.
The reigning DStv Premiership champions made a change in goal at half-time as Kennedy Mweene replaced Pieterse.
The second stanza did not have too many opportunities as Richards Bay contained Masandawana, however, Maema eventually broke the deadlock for Sundowns 14 minutes before time with a screamer from outside the box.
The second stanza came to life as The Natal Rich Boyz found the equaliser five minutes later courtesy of Simphiwe Mcineka.
However, neither side could find the winner in the closing stages, as penalty shoot-outs were required after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Sundowns lost the shoot-out 4-2, as Richards Bay goalkeeper Salim Magoola was the hero after saving two penalties from Mokoena and Bradley Ralani and they will now face AmaZulu in the final.
