Lebohang Cheeseboy Mokoena Explains Why He Didn't Extend His Sundowns Stay

Ajax Cape Town winger, Lebohang 'Cheeseboy' Mokoena revealed why he opted against extending his stay at Mamelodi Sundowns, and instead took a salary-cut to join the Urban Warriors after his Sundowns contract came to an end.

The 30-year-old joined up with the Cape Town-based club in hope of reigniting his footballing career, after an arguably unsuccessful spell with Sundowns. However, Cheeseboy had the option of remaining with the Chloorkop-based club, but opted against his football-career being dampened as he fell down the pecking order at Sundowns.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, the player revealed that he believes playing regular football is more important than earning a higher salary, and that going to Ikamva was not a difficult decision to make.

"When I look at my situation, err… a lot of people don't know it as well as they think. I left a big salary for the sake of my career to come and join Ajax. I know of a lot of people who would have accepted the contract extension at Sundowns, even though they were not playing, just to line up their pockets," he said.

"Like I said, coming to Ajax wasn't a difficult decision at all because I knew what I wanted for my career. I never let anyone dictate my career or happiness… I also don't want to be paid for doing nothing. That's not how I operate," Cheeseboy told the Siya crew.
