The Lions of the North were one of the most feared teams in Mzansi in the 1960s and 1970s, winning the National Football League (the equivalent of the PSL) eight times in the two decades.
In 1983 the club played its last official match and the professional remainder of the club became known as Jomo Cosmos in the 1984 season.
In 1996 Larry Brookstone got involved with the amateur team that continued playing under the name Highlands Park and after a short term affiliation with Silver Stars, the amateur side branched off and in 2003 the club managed to create a semi-professional team of their own.
Since then the club have climbed the leagues from the fourth tier SAFA Regional League and now find themselves in the NFD. Brookstone is eyeing promotion to the PSL and looking to emulate the aforementioned era by "doing things properly."
"We're going back to the 1960s and trying to take the whole thing full circle. I have five fields which we'll be using for training purposes although our pre-season is taking place in Modderfontein, where Highlands' SAB and Super League sides will remain," Brookstone told the Siya crew.
