Free State Stars Have Denied Club Sale Rumours

Free State Stars

Free State Stars have denied rumours that the club could still be sold. Rumours in local football fraternity indicate that Stars could be willing to discuss the sale of the club with Royal Eagles, with a view to relocate it from the Free State to KwaZulu-Natal.

However, Stars management have denied that the club is in talks to sell their PSL status to Eagles.

In July, the Bethlehem-based club accepted an offer to sell their PSL franchise to a consortium led by Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi.

Lesufi and the consortium were looking to revive Moroka Swallows to save the club and its brand from campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League.

While it looked as though Ea Lla Koto were already preparing for life beyond their involvement in the PSL and sold a number of their star players, the sale of the club failed after the consortium did not meet some of the conditions of sale.

Stars have been open in discussing the struggles of running a club in South Africa's top tier without substantial financial backing, and have attributed their financial struggles to losing their title sponsor, Bonitas.

Rumours in the football fraternity indicate that Stars are still keen on selling their PSL status. A Siya source has informed the crew that talks are taking place behind the scenes with the view of attempting to sell the club to the KwaZulu-Natal-based NFD side.

"Free State Stars' bosses still have plans to sell the club. You can expect denials on this, but I can tell you that meetings are taking place behind the scenes. Royal Eagles boss S'bu Mpisane is the frontrunner to buy the club in the future. There have been a couple of meetings taking place between the parties involved.

"Stars' management wants to sell the club and buy a status of a club in the Vodacom (ABC Motsepe) League to start from scratch, so to speak," said the source.

Stars' general manager, Rantsi Mokoena, denied that the club is in talks with Eagles. "It's not true and you can quote me," Mokoena told the crew.
