Coetzee Latest: If Sundowns Don't Exercise The Option...

Agent Mike Makaab has commented on the future of Rivaldo Coetzee, looking at the fact that he may not have enough time on the pitch to impress head coach Miguel Cardoso before his contract ends.

Coetzee's contract with the Tshwane giants expires at the end of June, but Sundowns have an option to extend the deal for another campaign.

The player, however, is yet to make an appearance under Cardoso after picking up an injury before the Portuguese mentor replaced Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach in December.

With a little over two months left in the campaign, the player's future is up in the air and his situation is expected to be clearer in May. Sundowns have a deadline of the end of May to exercise the option for the player who has made eight appearances in all competitions this season.

"He's doing fine. I think they haven't rushed him (to return), but he seems to be doing well. Let's hope that he is back on track soon," Makaab told Soccer Laduma, before commenting on whether there is concern if Coetzee will have time to impress Cardoso on the pitch.

"Not at all (worried). If Sundowns don't exercise the option, I am confident that we will have suitors. He is a talented player."

It's unclear, at this stage, when Coetzee will make a return to the 18-man matchday squad for Sundowns. The challenge is getting back to full fitness and breaking into the team before the end of the campaign. With the FIFA Club World Cup coming up in June, the former Ajax Cape Town player will be eager to participate in the United States too.

Sundowns have stood by Coetzee over the years, believing in his quality despite the injury setbacks he has had. In return, the 28-year-old has delivered some solid performances, be it in defence or midfield. Now, the big question is whether they will hold onto him beyond this season? Only time will tell.
