A win for the Team of Choice could have taken them up to third on the table, but some slack defending early in the second half cost them the points.

Free State, themselves, could have moved up to fourth on the table, but will be happy with the point in a game where they struggled to break down a resolute Maritzburg defence

It was a dream start for Maritzburg who took the lead as early as the second minute courtesy of a Kwanda Mngonyama strike.

Neither side really produced much after that in terms of goalmouth action. Free State were particularly poor in front of goal with some woeful long range shooting.

Maritzburg went to sleep at the start of the second half and were caught in defence by a long range ball from the back.

In the 56th minute some sloppy defending allowed Moeketsi Sekola to get on the end of a long ball over the top and he made no mistake with a clinical finish to level matters.

Both teams tried to find the winner thereafter, but neither could produce the goods in front of goals.

The result combined with Orlando Pirates 3-0 win over Polokwane sees Maritzburg dropping down to sixth on the table with eight points from five games while Free state are in seventh with seven points.

Free State Stars: Mtshali, Sankara, Letuka (Thebakang 64'), Mkhwanazi (Bester 67'), Thlone, Masehe, Mashego, Shabalala, Mdluli, Sekola, Abraw (Fileccia 52').

Maritzburg United: Vries, Mabaso, Matuka, Mngonyama, Hartog, Pantsil, Mkhize (Booysen 68'), Cele (Lentjies 65'), Banda, Vilakazi (Mandaza 50'), Anas.
