Amajita Miss Out On Bronze Medal

U20 AFCON Third/Fourth place play-off

Amajita 1-2 Guinea

Date: 12 March 2017

Venue: Heroes National Stadium

Amajita missed out on a bronze medal at the U20 AFCON, after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Guinea in their third/fourth play-off.

Amajita broke the deadlock after six minutes bagged his second goal of the tournament with a composed finish from close range.

South Africa's joy was short-lived as Guinea hit back minutes later as Katlego Mohamme headed the ball into his own.

It proved to be an evenly contested affair as the first half went on, although Amajita were let down by their decision-making in the final third.

Amajita should have restored their lead in the 38th minute when Itumeleng Shopane was played in by Mohamme, but the striker's was well saved by the Guinea shot-stopper.

The South Africans ended the half the stronger of the two nations, but were unable to restore their lead in the closing stages of first half.

Thabo Senong opted for a change after 53 minutes as Shopane made way for top scorer, Luther Singh.

The South Africans continued to push for the go-ahead goal, but it was Guinea who nearly went ahead in the 63rd minute but for a fine save from Sanele Tshabalala.

Guinea nearly went ahead in the 69th minute through Soumah, but the strike fired just wide of Tshabalala's goal.

Guinea were then awarded a penalty in the 85th minute when Tercious Malepe committed a foul in the box. Naby Bangoura stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 2-1.

Amajita pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Guinea managed to hold on for the win.

Here's how they lined up:

Amajita XI: Tshabalala; Mohamme; Ceres; Malepe (C); Ngezana; Meyiwa; Margeman; Jordan; Mbule; Kodisang; Shopane

Subs: Mpoto ; Khubeka; Ngcobo; Mukumela; Mthethwa; Singh; Mbatha; Mayo.
