Banyana Banyana Could Land An Award In Nigeria Tonight

South Africa's female football team, Banyana Banyana, are on the brink of landing an award for Team of the Year at tonight's Glo-CAF Awards event. Read: Downs Trio Make CAF XI It was confirmed on Wednesday that Banyana, who started the year coached by Vera Pauw but ended it with Desiree Ellis as interim head coach, have made it into the final three for the African Women's National Team of the Year award, although they face stiff competition. The South Africans – one of only two African women's team who went to the Rio Olympic Games – will be up against Cameroon and Nigeria on Thursday evening in Abuja, two teams that have won this category four (two each) of the five times it has been awarded since 2010. Ellis' captain, Janine van Wyk, unfortunately didn't make the final three for the Women's Player of the Year category, with Asisat Oshoala, Elizabeth Addo and Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene getting the nod. Banyana are one of three South African nominations still left in the running for awards this evening, with Pitso Mosimane and his side, Mamelodi Sundowns, up for Coach and Team of the Year respectively.
