Kaizer Chiefs and newly crowned Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns could be set to go toe-to-toe in order to secure the services of Maritzburg United midfielder Deolin Mekoa.
The SA U23 star has been heavily linked to the Amakhosi since March, but they are not the only one after him, with Masandawana reportedly having shown interest in the 22-year-old in order too.
Though it remains a question as to who the frontrunners are to land the Wentworth-born attacker, it can't be argued that Steve Komphela holds a bit of an advantage in persuading him to join his charges as he has worked with the player during his coaching days at the Team of Choice. With Chiefs losing veteran midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane to SuperSport United, this could provide Mekoa an opportunity to come in and fill in the void left by 'Yeye'.
On the other hand, Mekoa could also look to afford himself an opportunity to feature in the CAF Champions League, especially with industrious midfielder Bongani Zungu leaving the Tshwane giants to join Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes.
The former Young Cavaliers man joined Maritzburg ahead of the 2014/15 season and has been impressive for the Ernst Middendorp-led side, where he has amassed over 40 appearances, most notably helping them avoid PSL relegation in the most dramatic fashion, as they came back from a goal down to thrash Jomo Cosmos 3-1 on the final day of league fixtures.
Mekoa's contract with Maritzburg expires in June of 2017, which means that if he does not leave during the off-season, the KwaZulu-Natal side could lose out on cashing in on him as he will be able to exit for free in just over a year's time.
