Chiefs Lose Last PSL Match

Absa Premiership

Full Time: University of Pretoria 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs

Venue: Mbombela Stadium

Date: 18 May 2013

A solitary goal from Thabo Mosadi handed the University of Preortia a 1-0 win over the 2012/13 Absa Premiership Champions, Kaizer Chiefs, at the Mbombela Stadium in their last match of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Still, despite only their third league loss of the season Chiefs were in jubilant fashion as they lifted the PSL title in front of a packed Mbombela stadium.

The result for Tuks sees them into the top eight as they finished eight on the PSL table.

Chiefs made their intentions clear early on as Siphiwe Tshabalala let fly with a thunderous shot from just inside the box in the third minute, but he saw his effort go narrowly wide.

The awareness of Tuks goalkeeper, Washington Arubi, kept the scores level in the 16th minute as he was quick off his line to get to a long ball ahead of Kingston Nkhatha.

Four minutes later and Nkhatha was in the action again as he latched onto a long free-kick into the box, but Arubi was on hand again to deny the forward.

Tuks first real chance on goal came in the 27th minute as Dipsy Selolwane tired his luck form long range, but Itumeleng Khune made a comfortable save.

In the 31st minute Nkhatha should really have given Chiefs the lead when he was on the end of a superb left-wing cross from Tshabalala, but the Zimbabwean international fluffed his shot with an open goal at his mercy.

Five minutes before the break Tuks suffered a set-back as Ronald Ketjijere had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Thabo Mosadi.

There were no other decent chances in the half which ended 0-0.

The start of the second 45 saw Chiefs continue to do the pressing, but again they really struggled to fashion any decent chances on goal as the Tuks defence continued to frustrate them.

Nkhatha had the first real chance of the second stanza in the 57th minute as the ball broke to him just outside the box, but he fired high of the target.

Three minutes later and Chiefs were made to pay for all their wasted possession as Tuks, very much against the run of play, took the lead through a Mosadi goal.

The Tuks attacker broke behind the Chiefs defence and despite fluffing his shot in a one-on-one situation with Khune it was enough to get past the keeper and find the back of the net, 1-0.

Chiefs tried to hit back, but the Tuks defence was keeping them at bay and forcing them to shoot from long range, one such attempt coming from the boot of Sthembiso Ngcobo in the 65th minute, but his effort was off target.

Chiefs continued to throw numbers forward in the hope of finding an equaliser, but in doing so left themselves exposed to the counter-attack.

And in the 80th minute Chiefs needed the heroics of their captain to keep them only one goal adrift as Khune produced a fine one-on-one save to deny Mama Niang.

The match ended 1-0 in favour of Tuks.
