Atletico Miss Chance To Go Top

Atletico Madrid wasted a glorious chance to overtake Barcelona at the top of the table, as they let a one goal lead slip in their 1-1 draw against Sevilla at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.

Atletico came into the game knowing that a home win would take them top of the Spanish League for the first time this season.

Filipe had the first shot of the game in the 13th minute after playing a neat one-two with veteran striker David Villa but the left-back’s shot went way over the bar.

Diego Costa then produced a cheeky bit of skill and tried to catch Beto off his line, but the Brazilian born striker’s shot goes into the side-netting with 14 minutes on the clock.

The home side then did take the lead at the Vicente Calderon when former Barcelona striker Villa drilled home from close-range after Godin nodded the ball back into the danger area at the back post following a corner, to make it 1-0 to Diego Simeone’s men with 19 minutes played.

The home side looked comfortable and started to dominate possession as the second-half went on but Simeone’s men needed that second goal to make sure of the three points.

Atletico were then made to pay for not scoring that all important second as Sevilla equalised against the run of play.

A long ball was played into the box towards striker Bacca and fullback Juanfran pulled the Sevilla man down with the referee awarding the penalty, an unnecessary foul to commit.

Sevilla skipper Ivan Rakitic then stepped up and confidently slotted the spot-kick past Courtois in the Atletic goal.

The Madrid side then threw men forward to try and snatch a late winner but it was not to be as they wasted the opportunity to leapfrog Barcelona at the top of the table.
