Mohamed Salah's transfer from AS Roma to Liverpool was announced on Thursday evening.
While initial reports suggested that he joined the English side for £34 million (R560 million), which would have equalled the African transfer record, Roma later confirmed they received an initial fee of £36.9 million (R607 million) and will get up to another £7 million (R115 million) in performance-based bonuses.
Salah beat Sadio Mane's £34 million (R559 million) move to Anfield and is now the most expensive African in history. Eric Bailly sits in third after completing a £30 million (R494 million) move from Villarreal to Manchester United in 2016.
Islam Slimani and Wilfried Bony are joint fourth, having signed for Leicester City and Manchester City, respectively, for £28 million (R461 million) each.
Emmanuel Adebayor and Yannick Bolasie share sixth position after completing moves worth £25 million (R411 million), when the former joined City in 2009 and the latter Everton in 2016.
Michael Essien's £24.4 million (R402 million) Chelsea deal in 2005 slightly edges the £24 million (R395 million) moves of Didier Drogba to Chelsea and Yaya Toure to Manchester City.
In a surprising coincidence, all of the 10 most expensive transfers involving African players were moves to or between Premier League clubs.
