Brazilian football has been rocked by another air tragedy, with four players and the president of Palmas FC having died in a plane crash on Sunday.
According to The Guardian, the group of players were travelling separately from the rest of the squad due to positive coronavirus tests.
The small group was on a private plane that crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in Tocantins, with the pilot of the aircraft, currently named only as Wagner, also losing his life.
As it stands, there is no clear cause for the tragic accident just yet.
Palmas were travelling to Goiania to play in a Copa Verde match against Vila Nova, and the victims were later identified as club president Lucas Meira, as well as players Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme Noe, Ranule and Marcus Molinari.
Fellow Brazilian club Chapecoense suffered a similar tragedy back in 2016, losing 19 players in a plane crash in Colombia, and they released a statement of support of Palmas.
"Unfortunately, we know what this moment of pain is like and we wish that no other group had to feel the same," Chapecoense said in a statement.
"You won't go through this alone."
FIFA also released a statement on the matter, saying: "Football extends its deepest sympathies to the victims and their families at this difficult time."
