South African Football Association’s president, Danny Jordaan has indicated that the association will look to broaden the Bafana Bafana squad for the CHAN qualifiers.
The South African National team will play their opening AFCON qualification encounter against Nigeria next month, June 10, and this fixture will then be followed by the opening CHAN qualifying fixture against Botswana in July, both before the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying encounter against Cape Verde in August this year.
Speaking to SAFA’s official website, Jordaan revealed that the association should look at broadening the national team set-up, in order to have enough players to participate in every competition without putting a stretch on the current squad.
“Of course, beyond the AFCON qualifiers, we have the CHAN qualifiers and we have indicated that we should look at CHAN to broaden our pool of players. We would not expect the coach to use the players pursuing the FIFA World Cup and AFCON qualification to also pursue CHAN qualification because that would be quite a stretch on the players,” Jordaan said on SAFA’s official website.
“Looking at the past COSAFA Cup, we won with basically our U23 team and used it to prepare the U23 for the Olympics and now we use it to broaden our pool of players going forward,” he added.
