It is Thursday once again, and as usual Supporters Club throws back. Today, we take you down memory lane to the 1992 Coca-Cola Cup quarter-final between the two Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
The game took place at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, and both teams had great players in their stables. Chiefs had the likes of Fani Madida, Doctor Khumalo, Ace Khuse and Shane McGregor, among others, while the Buccaneers had a number of stars as well, like Tebogo Moloi, David Nyathi, Bashin Mahlangu and Botsotso Makhanya, to mention just a few.
Bucs were the first to draw blood when "Going Up" Nyathi scored from close range. A few minutes later Tsepo "Ma Razor" Ntsoane added a second for Ezikamagebhula when he hit a scorcher just outside the 18-yard area. It was 2-0 to Pirates at half-time.
Amakhosi came out smoking fire in the second stanza and their efforts were rewarded when "Didiza" Madida scored from the penalty spot. Ten minutes after that, Albert "Mqombothi" Bwalya levelled matters to take the game to extra-time.
It was in the second half of extra time that Madida scored from a great through-ball from Khumalo to secure his brace and seal the Sea Robbers' fate. The final score read: Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 Orlando Pirates, and Amakhosi went through to the semi-finals and then the final, where they lost 3-1 to AmaZulu.
What memories do you have of that game, bad or good?
