Remembering "Slow Poison"

Remembering "Slow Poison"

Today marks exactly 14 years since the late Phuti Lesley "Slow Poison" Manyathela (4 September 1981 – 9 August 2003) passed away. The lanky Orlando Pirates striker was only 21 years old when he tragically lost his life in a car accident close to his hometown of Musina in the Limpopo province.

Before his death, Manyathela was a top goalscorer in the South African PSL, scoring 22 goals (18 league + 4 in cup competitions). This also helped his team, Orlando Pirates, claim league championship honours in the 2002/03 season.

After his death, Manyathela's No. 22 was retired by Pirates in his honour.

He also played a total of nine games for the South African national football team, Bafana Bafana, scoring three goals.

South Africa was robbed of a great talent by his passing. He will always be remembered for his goalscoring prowess.

From everyone at Supporters Club, we salute our fallen hero, and may his soul continue to rest peacefully.

What are your memories of Slow Poison?
