Barker Praises Ex-Chiefs Man For Reviving Career

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker has opened up on the revival of midfielder Darrel Matsheke, who was released by Kaizer Chiefs in October.

The Western Cape outfit bagged their first top-flight trophy after defeating TS Galaxy on penalties in the Carling Knockout final on Saturday.

Matsheke has been able to regular minutes with Stellenbosch after being signed as a free agent and has already picked up two Man of the Match awards in the DStv Premiership.

The former Chiefs youngster netted the winning penalty in the Carling Knockout final and Barker revealed he is proud of the player.

"Darrel Matsheke was club-less, he was released from Kaizer Chiefs, he was training at Casric trying to earn himself a contract," Barker told SuperSport after the game.

He has come to us, he has been absolutely superb and I'm just really proud of him to score the winning goal for us."

Matsheke was a second-half substitute along with the likes of Mervin Boji, Antonio Van Wyk and Andre de Jong.

"I thought of late we've also got a similar thing to the Springboks, the bomb squad, so players have been coming on and changing games, bringing the energy," he added.

"I thought we were lacking a bit of energy and spark, we needed something and I thought Andre, Antonio, Mervin Boji that's exactly what they gave us when they came on, especially Antonio, he was taking people on and getting behind."
