Barker On Losing To Chiefs: Big Calls Against Us

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker was left disappointed after his side lost to Kaizer Chiefs by way of three penalties.

Stellies conceded three penalties against Amakhosi at the DHL Stadium on Sunday and went on to lose the match 3-1 as Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana converted on all three occasions when referee Tshidiso Maruping pointed to the spot.

Barker's side had taken the lead on the half-hour mark through Nhlanhla Mgaga before it started raining penalties deep into referee's optional time at the end of the first half and onto the second second stanza.

Speaking to journalists after the match, Barker expressed his disappointment on how things turned out for his side.

"Three penalties (and) a red card, it's difficult when that happens to win a football game. We just maybe were not at our best defensively today, especially at the start of the game. A couple of big chances for them, I thought Sage Stephens has done well. They dominated the first 15-20 minutes and I think the game settled a bit just leading into half time. Obviously, we pressed them in their final third. They were able to get the lead. Going into half time, 1-0 and 1-1 is two very different score lines in a situation like today, so I felt that the penalty that was given just before half time maybe just changed the complexion of the game going into the change room and obviously gave them a lift," said Barker.

"Second half, conceding again two penalties, yeah you just can't win football matches if you are going to be conceding three penalties in a match and also getting a red card. I can't fault the effort of the players though, I thought they tried their best. In actual fact, when we went to 10 men it looked like we would be less likely to concede whether they took the foot a bit off the pedal maybe and just looked to retain the ball, you know it could have maybe been their sort of approach. So, yeah, overall, a bit disappointing, the last two matches against Chiefs in Cape Town it's just been a couple of big calls that have gone against us," the coach added.
