Stellies Bid To Open Title Race With Downs' Scalp

Stellies Bid To Open Title Race With Downs' Scalp

After beating Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch takes their aim at Mamelodi Sundowns in a bid to challenge for the Premiership title.

Stellies became the first side to beat Pirates in the league this season after edging them 1-0 last Sunday, which was actually their third successive league victory over the Buccaneers.

As a result, the title race became more open, as the Soweto giants are equal on points with Sundowns, who topped the log on goal difference.

With only six points separating them with Masandawana in third place, the Western Cape outfit are fired up to close the gap to just three points in their upcoming clash against the Brazilians next Wednesday.

"Our next match is against Sundowns, we just played Pirates. That would be a game to try and win and close the gap to make it three points [behind Sundowns]," Stellies head coach Steve Barker said in an interview on Metro FM Sports.

"I just believe every year if we can continue to get more points than the previous season. We ended up on 50 points last season, so it would be fantastic to get more than 50. We have to run our own race and hopefully, eventually we're gonna be in a position to challenge for the league.

"We also hold it deep in our hearts, in our soul, we would like to challenge and try stay in the race as long as we can. Last season we were disappointed, we should've finished second in the league, we just stumbled in the last couple of games, Pirates pipped us on the last day on goal difference. I want to win the league, right from the beginning, me and my players is what we try to do," Barker added.

However, before facing the Tshwane grants, the Maroons will host RSB Berkane in their second CAF Confederation Cup group encounter on Sunday at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Barker's charges will then welcome Masandawana at the Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday.
