In the latest episode of The Big Interview, brought to you by DStv Compact, acclaimed choreographer reality television star Somizi discusses how he went about putting together the opening closing ceremonies for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The ceremonies were met with adoration for their vibrant colour, dancing and representation of South African culture. As the country celebrates a decade since the historic sporting event, Somizi takes SL Radio through the creative process behind that extraordinary spectacle.
"The creative process takes plus-minus two months of just conceptual ideas and brainstorming. And then we start getting into the practical and the physical eight weeks before the actual ceremony. So for the opening of the World Cup, we had [about] 3000 performers, that includes dancers, brass band, musicians from all over the continent and a whole lot of gymnasts and so forth and so on. Then, myself and a team of creatives, by the time it gets to the physical, we have to have plotted everything on paper and then we get on the ground. The beginning part, it looks like it's never gonna come together."
In the full podcast, Somizi also discusses growing up in Soweto, which football team he supports and his latest project with DStv.
