Beckham Makes Significant Investment Into Esports

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar, David Beckham, has become a co-owner of London-based esports company, Guild Esports.

The company, which was previously known as The Lords Esports, recently held its global launch, and with this it was announced that the former England star was a co-owner.

The business is aiming to accumulate £25M GBP (R533 m) in the current round of financing, which would take the organisation's valuation up to £100M GBP (R2,1 billion).

The participants in this round of financing are DB Ventures and Blue Star Capital.

Blue Star Capital have already invested £150 000 (R3,2 m) into the project, under its previous name, when it was founded late last year, which gave them an 11.7% stake in the business and they went invest further to maintain that stake.

DB Ventures, which is owned by parent company Beckham Brand Holdings and is controlled by David Beckham, Victoria Beckham and Footwork Productions (majority-owned by David). Esports Observer indicates that the stake acquired by the former footballer is "significant but minority".

During the announcement, it was revealed that the organisation intends on creating a sports academy model that will provide a better pipeline for talented, UK-based players, and intends on competing in various esports disciplines over the next year.

Some of the titles mentioned include FIFA 20, Rocket League and Fortnite.
