Mokwena Contract Talks Revealed

Mokwena Contract Talks Revealed

Mamelodi Sundowns are understood to have resumed contract talks with head coach Rhulani Mokwena now that the season has ended. The Brazilians would have hoped to see the young mentor lead them all the way to the coveted CAF Champions League title, but Downs were knocked out by Wydad Casablanca last weekend in the semi-finals.

However, that hasn't stopped the two sides forging ahead with discussions over Mokwena putting pen to paper on a new deal. Siya sources have suggested that the main hurdle at the moment is the length of the agreement between the two parties, with chairman Thlopane Motsepe having been quoted in a recent interview saying the Brazilians had every intention to hold on to Mokwena as a "young and promising" coach.

The former Orlando Pirates tactician returned to Chloorkop in 2020 as part of Pitso Mosimane's backroom staff for a second time having left three years earlier to join Milutin "Micho" Sredojevic at the Buccaneers in a similar role. He then took charge for 15 games when the Serbian quit before being "seconded" to Chippa United when the Soweto giants hired Josef Zinnbauer.

Mokwena signed an assistant coach contract that runs until June 2024, but it's believed the current discussions is regarding a new deal that reflects his current role as the sole head coach having led the club alongside Manqoba Mngqithi prior to the latter being demoted in October. Sundowns were officially crowned DStv Premiership champions last week and insiders have informed Soccer Laduma that once the two parties agree on the length of the new deal, there will be an announcement.

Does Mokwena deserve a bumper deal?
