How Badela & Mngqitihi's Roles Could Change

Mamelodi Sundowns' DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team head coach Sinethemba Badela is tipped to be given an assistant coach position in the first team, the Siya crew has been informed.

Siya sources close to the club have indicated that their senior technical team and the Sporting Director have agreed that Badela's services are needed in the first team.

The sources added that Badela could be expected to work full-time with the Sundowns first team from next season, so then the second assistant coach Michael Loftman could return to his position as set-piece coach.

"Most of the time Badela works with the first team and now they feel that he has to work full-time with the first team as their assistant coach. His contribution to the team is so good so they feel if he can join as an assistant coach it will add more value to the team," said the Siya source.

"Actually it's a recommendation with the first technical team that they feel coach Badela can work with the first team because of his experience," the source told Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source stated that the team is also monitoring coach Manqoba Mngqithi's situation as his contract is coming to an end at the end of the season.

"They don't want to be caught off guard if Mngqithi leaves at the end of the season and they have to look for an assistant coach but at the same time they are planning to have Michael (Loftman) return to his set-piece coaching job which they feel needs more attention hence the need to have Badela as one of the assistant coaches," the source observed.

Soccer Laduma has already reported how Mngqithi is one of the five head coaches on Chiefs' shortlist.

As for 34-year-old Badela, he has the experience required because he had worked at different clubs in the past including Chippa United where he was the assistant coach and he also worked for Motsepe Foundation League side All Stars where he was the head coach. Then Badela joined Sundowns last season, taking over from club legend Surprise Moriri.

So far in the DDC, he has led the side to second position, just behind Orlando Pirates with both teams at 44 points and only separated by goal difference.

Soccer Laduma contacted Mamelodi Sundowns for a comment but no response was received by the time the story was published.
