Insider: Why Chiefs & Co Are Struggling To Sign Polokwane Stars

Insider: Why Chiefs & Co Are Struggling To Sign Polokwane Stars

Thabang Matuludi of Polokwane City challenges Taariq Mathews of Mamelodi Sundowns during the 2024 MTN8 quarterfinal match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Polokwane City on 11 August 2024 at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville

Kaizer Chiefs and the other big guns have set their sights on players from Polokwane City although there has been an apparent difficulty in getting their targets, and sources have indicated why.

Following their impressive performances which helped Rise and Shine to finish eighth on the log in their first season back in the top flight, Thabang Matuludi and Oswin Appollis have attracted interest in the PSL and abroad.

With Chiefs still hopeful of winning the race for Appollis before the transfer window deadline next Friday, the Soweto giants are understood to be also trying for Matuludi's signature with a view to add him to coach Nasreddine Nabi's squad.

Matuludi, who played alongside Chiefs' new signing Rushwin Dortley in defence for South Africa during the 2024 Cosafa Cup in June, had also been on the radar of Amakhosi's perennial rivals Orlando Pirates.

However, since strengthening the right-back position in Jose Riveiro's team with Deano van Rooyen from Stellenbosch FC, the Buccaneers' interest in Matuludi has seemingly died down, with Chiefs now one of the clubs still keen on the 25-year-old, according to sources.

"Interest has been there all along from the big clubs in Thabang but the issue here is that his club is reluctant to sell. It isn't like the club doesn't want to allow the players to go for greener pastures, but it's about the team keeping the momentum in the PSL," said the source.

"You must remember that Polokwane City were playing in the big league for the first time last season in a long time after winning promotion and they exceeded expectations by finishing in the top eight. That's why there's been reluctance from the club in allowing the players to leave," the source said.
