Du Preez Contract Update: Chiefs Can't Afford To Lose Him For Free

With reported ongoing interest from Portuguese side Vitoria SC, Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be taking steps to secure their striker, Ashley Du Preez beyond his current contract, which runs until June 2025.

Insiders at Chiefs and sources close to the player have indicated that the club is believed to have offered the former Stellenbosch FC striker a new two-year contract, which would extend his stay at the club until June 2027 upon signing.

The Siya sources added that the club is eager to ensure Du Preez's commitment to Naturena, regardless of whether Vitoria SC presents another offer.

"It's on the cards. But they have not received anything in writing as yet. But something will happen soon. All the involved parties are happy with what's happening at the moment and that's why they have offered him another two years on his contract until June 2027. The club still believes in him despite a few bad games here and there. So I think by January all will have been settled from the way things are going on," the Siya source stated.

A second insider noted that the club is keen to avoid a situation where Du Preez could become a free agent in January, since his contract expires in June 2025.

"I think the new deal would be signed before the January transfer window period closes so that he is not eligible as a free agent. They can't afford to lose their top striker like that, and after all, there is interest in him where they can make some money if they eventually sell him. So by all means, they will make sure they tie him down as soon as possible," the second source stated.

The 27-year-old joined Chiefs in July 2022 with a three-year contract. In his first season, he played regularly and showed potential to improve. Last season his form dipped over the course of the campaign. So far this season, he hasn't amazed but will have to pick up his scoring rate when given an opportunity.

Attempts to contact Chiefs for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publishing. As Du Preez continues his tenure with Chiefs, securing his future with the club reflects their commitment to building a competitive squad.

By extending his contract, Amakhosi are both protecting their current roster and positioning themselves strategically for potential future negotiations.
