Khune Backs Ngezana For Europe’s Elite

Veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has heaped praise on former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana for his rapid growth and professionalism since making the move to Europe.

Ngezana has enjoyed another stellar season with Romanian giants FCSB, helping them secure their second consecutive Liga I title and a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

The 27-year-old has also made headlines for his performances in the UEFA Europa League, where he has gone toe-to-toe with top European opposition.

Speaking about his former teammate, Khune revealed how Ngezana’s work ethic and fearless attitude made a lasting impression even during their time together at Naturena.

“You know what stood out about Siya? He was never scared to push me,” Khune told the Siya crew.

“As a senior, sometimes people think you can’t be challenged. But Siya was the one telling me, ‘Itu, let’s go to the gym. Join me for sit-ups.’ And I respected that.”

Khune added that Ngezana was extremely dedicated to his physical conditioning and football development.

“He was a gym freak, I won’t lie. We’d be training three times a day. Morning session, field session, then ice baths. He took it seriously.”

“Because of that discipline, he’s now playing against teams like Manchester United in Europe. He’s playing in the Europa League. He might even play in the Champions League next season. And who knows, he could be the next South African after Benni McCarthy to win it.”

Ngezana’s success in Romania has not gone unnoticed back home, with Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos including the centre-back in recent squads. His performances at FCSB have also drawn praise from international media and scouts alike.
