SA Olympics Squad Leaked!

SA Olympics Squad Leaked!

David Notoane

David Notoane has picked three overaged players for the Tokyo Olympics later next month in a final leaked list seen by the Siya crew.

Ronwen Williams, Abbubaker Mobara and Thabiso Kutumela have been included in the 22-man squad set to face hosts Japan, Mexico and France.

Perhaps the biggest omission is that of strikers Luther Singh and Lyle Foster, two Portuguese-based players seen as the future for Bafana Bafana.

It's not yet clear when coach Notoane is meant to officially announce the team heading to the multi-coded sporting event in Tokyo, but the Siya crew has in possession a list of players set to make the trip to Saudi Arabia for a training camp before heading over to the Games.

But the names have to be submitted to SASCOC by June 30.

Notoane had begun the process initially by selecting 78 players last year before Covid struck and halted the games, forcing organisers to move the global showpiece to this year, though there have been concerns over the pandemic.

He trimmed the list to 40 back in March, with a tournament in the United Arab Emirates planned, though it was later also cancelled because of the virus.

During the most recent FIFA break earlier this month, Notoane named a 25-man squad for two back-to-back friendly matches away to Egypt, but his side suffered defeats in both with an aggregate scoreline of 5-0.

Now, it now appears the coach, who had pointed out that picking the final squad for the Olympics would be a king-size headache, has made a decision.

There will be a lot of debate about several omission, especially after Bafana coach Hugo Broos picked a few young players for the friendly against Uganda – and some of the players who did well for the senior team haven't made the cut.

The full 23-man squad:

Goalkeepers:

Mondli Mpoto, Ronwen Williams, Sifiso Mlungwana

Defenders:

Katlego Mohamme, Thendo Mukumela, Luke Fleurs, Sibusiso Mabiliso, Abbubaker Mobara, Kamogelo Mahlangu, Thabiso Monyane, Reeve Frosler

Midfielders: Teboho Mokoena, Goodman Mosele, Athenkosi Dladla, Sipho Mbule, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Kamohelo Mahlatsi

Strikers: Fagrie Lakay, Evidence Makgopa, Thabiso Kutumela, Keletso Makgalwa, Kgaogelo Sekgota

Who do you think should have made the squad?
