Contract Ends, But SAFA To Make Final Call

Contract Ends, But SAFA To Make Final Call

The South African Football Association has provided an update on the future of coach David Notoane.

He returned from the Olympic Games in Tokyo recently, where the national U23 side took on hosts Japan, France and Mexico – losing all three games and inviting criticism over how his side fared there.

Notoane was appointed in the role in February 2019 and immediately tasked to take the team to the multi-coded sporting event, which he achieved.

But the three defeats in Tokyo, though the South African team's treatment there under strict Covid regulations did not make it easy, put the microscope on the coach's future going forward.

It's emerged that his contract has in fact lapsed, but Tebogo Motlanthe, who is SAFA CEO, said that did not mean the coach was leaving.

"I can confirm that the coach's contract has ended, but we are still going to sit down and talk to map out a way forward," was all Motlanthe would tell the Siya crew when asked for comment.

Usually, the standard procedure is for the coach – whether staying or vacating the post – to submit a report following a major tournament.

Notoane will be expected to do the same by the SAFA technical committee and that would help his employers make the final decision.

He is also part of the Mamelodi Sundowns technical set up, a position he would be expected to return to on a full-time basis should he leave the national team job after his discussion with the SAFA hierarchy.
