Zongo: That's When I Started Drinking

Zongo: That's When I Started Drinking

STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 09, Masibusane Zongo of Supersport United during the Absa Premiership match between Santos and SuperSport United from Coetzenburg Stadium on May 09, 2009 in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Former SuperSport United academy product, Masibusane Zongo has outlined what led to his demise in his football career.

Gavin Hunt was instrumental in Zongo being promoted to the first team from the SuperSport academy in 2008. The talented left winger, at 17, took the PSL by storm and had the country buzzing with his ability on the ball.

However, Zongo's reputation started to be affected in the early stages of his career, where he soon became known for his off-field antics.

About 17 years later, the Mthatha native attacker has revealed what led to his drinking issue, which blighted him throughout his career, just after he was promoted at Matsatsantsa.

"This is what happened, I replaced Daine Klate (when he was injured), I performed well, everyone is talking about me in the country. The guy recovers, great," Zongo opened up on Trap and Pass YouTube Channel

"From there, he went straight into the line-up. (At first) I was like, 'Okay, I know he's the first choice'. I thought I would be on the bench but they sent me to the stands. Langerman, who was on the bench when I was playing (remained on the bench).

"So I couldn't understand, so that's when it all started... I didn't find it fair. I understand that he's first choice but as a coach, explain to me, say something. It didn't sit well with me that's when I started drinking, and started to lose focus on my career," Zongo revealed.

Zongo was tipped as one of the best young players of his age as a teenager, especially after he was part of the South Africa team that won the U12 Danone World Cup.

However, the Gqeberha-born midfielder's wayward ways, influenced mainly by alcohol, led to him not fulfilling his potential.

Due to his troublesome tendencies, Zongo was sent out on loan to clubs such as Vasco Da Gama and Bidvest Wits before he started to drop down the divisions.
