As Orlando Pirates gear up to launch their 2025/26 campaign with an MTN8 quarterfinal clash against Polokwane City, the fixture carries added emotional weight for one of the Buccaneers’ newest recruits, Oswin Appollis.
The talented winger, who joined the Soweto giants during the winter transfer window, could make his official debut this weekend – and fittingly, it may come against the very club that shaped much of his topflight journey.

Appollis spent the majority of his topflight career in Polokwane colours, having made his MTN8 debut with the Limpopo-based side at the start of the previous season.
Now, just a year later, he finds himself donning the famous Black and White kit of one of the most decorated clubs in South African football.
His move to Orlando was one of the standout moments of the transfer window, and since arriving, the 23-year-old has already had a taste of the Buccaneers’ high-performance culture.
This included a pre-season trip to Spain and a string of friendly encounters back home as he settled into his new surroundings.
Reflecting on his early experiences, Appollis spoke positively about the transition, highlighting the welcoming environment and the significance of representing a club he admired as a youngster.
“It’s amazing. I’m happy to be part of this big club and the teammates have been great to me,” he told Orlandopiratesfc.com. “Growing up watching Pirates was amazing and most of my good friends support the club. The day they inquired about me, I didn’t hesitate to sign.”
While Appollis may be new to Pirates’ matchday squad, he is no stranger to their upcoming opponents.
With over 50 professional appearances for Polokwane City under his belt, the winger’s inside knowledge of their style and setup could prove valuable as the Sea Robbers begin their title defence.
Still, the Bafana Bafana international believes that Pirates must keep their focus on themselves and the collective goals they’ve set for the season ahead.
“Of course, it’s going to be difficult as they are a strong team,” he said. “Most importantly, we have to focus on what we do as a group.”
For Appollis, joining a club of Pirates' stature also brings personal ambition into sharper focus.
Despite a steadily growing reputation and regular national team call-ups, there remains one glaring omission in his career: silverware.
And that’s something he hopes to change soon.

“Getting my first trophy as a footballer. I mean, who doesn’t wanna win trophies?” Appollis revealed. “Plus helping the team when I’m called up to come to do my job,” he said, speaking to the club’s official website.
This afternoon’s clash could mark the start of a fruitful new chapter – not just for Appollis, but for a Pirates side looking to build on last season’s cup success and push for more in 2025/26. The stage is set at a sold-out venue, and all eyes will be on whether Appollis can shine against his former team, this time wearing the Black and White of the Buccaneers.
