Riveiro Condemns 'Bullying' From Pirates Fans

Riveiro Condemns 'Bullying' From Pirates Fans

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has condemned the behaviour from a small faction of fans who continue to jeer players they don't like on home soil.

Pirates played their first home game since the restart a week before this past weekend, as they finally got back to winning ways with a 3-1 thrashing of Golden Arrows.

However, the win over Arrows was somewhat spoiled by a small section of fans who jeered Terrence Dzvukamanja and did not approve him coming on as a late substitute.

In the Buccaneers' second successive home game at Orlando Stadium, there were boos again despite the Soweto giants recording a resounding 4-1 win over Stellenbosch.

Goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane seems to have been the target this time around and Riveiro says he would understand if it was the away fans doing it and is disappointed this behaviour is from a section of home fans.

"I don't think it's a good idea not to support one of our players when he's just about to go to field and replace one of the players, it doesn't matter what is his name or his position," Riveiro told reporters in a press conference.

"It's nice when you're playing away and the fans are bullying you and you get motivated. But it's not that nice when you're playing in your own ground.

"I answered this question last week and when you write your report I will appreciate a lot if you complete my answer, not only the first part," he said.

"I think we're making an issue about something that is residual, we're talking about a small number of people, overall the people coming to our stadium are not doubting our players and support until the end."

However, the Spanish mentor revealed that personally he has been pleasantly surprised by the massive support Pirates get in the away matches.

"When we're playing away the support that we're getting is crazy, I've never seen something like that in my life. When we play in Durban, Cape Town, whatever, in Polokwane," he went on.

"So I think we shouldn't make an issue about this but at the same time bullying is something terrible in every scenario.

"It's something we should all take very serious. It's too deep to talk about now, I'm so happy with 'Mpontshi' (Mpontshane), his professionalism and the way he's handling the situation, he's a strong guy," he concluded.
