Fixture Chaos & Injury Concerns Could Fast-Track Mokoena’s Pirates Promotion

Fixture Chaos & Injury Concerns Could Fast-Track Mokoena’s Pirates Promotion

Asimbonge Mdunge of Richards Bay FC challenges Neo Mokoena of Orlando Pirates during the Dstv Diski Challenge 2024/25 match between Richards Bay FC and Orlando Pirates on 23 February 2025 at Chatsworth Stadium in Chatsworth

Orlando Pirates' mounting fixture congestion and lack of squad depth could see rising star Neo Mokoena earn a fast-tracked promotion to the first team.

With injuries piling up and key players unavailable, the Buccaneers are scrambling for solutions in attack.

As reported by the Siya crew, Mokoena could be the next player to earn first-team promotion, following in the footsteps of Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Siyabonga Ndlozi.

According to sources, the 21-year-old is under consideration as the Buccaneers may look to reinforce their squad amid a testing period of injuries and fatigue.

Mokoena has been a standout performer for Pirates' DStv Diski Challenge side, consistently delivering goals and assists.

His skillset and attacking prowess have drawn comparisons to the late Gift Leremi, with many believing he has the potential to become one of the top wingers in the PSL.

The Buccaneers' depth on the flanks has been in question following their decision to loan out Katlego Otladisa and Gilberto (Deivi Miguel Vieira) in January.

Additionally, for over three months now, Bucs have been without Monnapule Saleng in their line-up, with no sign of when the ex- Premiership Players' Player of the Season is likely to return.

This has sometimes forced coach Jose Riveiro to deploy defender Bandile Shandu as a makeshift winger.

To address this issue, Pirates have been linked with Baroka FC's Kabelo Kgositsile, who has impressed in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Despite external reinforcements being considered, Mokoena's impressive performances in the Reserve League, where he is nearing double figures in goal contributions, have strengthened his case for promotion.

With Pirates' track record of integrating young talent into the first team, Mokoena could soon join Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota in making the step up.

As the season reaches its climax, all eyes will be on whether Mokoena's performances earn him a well-deserved spot in the senior squad.

"The boy (Mokoena) has been doing well, and it won't be a surprise to see him making the step up. It's part of the plan," said the source.
