Ndlanya: Where Makgopa Needs To Improve

Ndlanya: Where Makgopa Needs To Improve

Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa of Orlando Pirates celebrate during the Betway Premiership 2024/25 match between Orlando Pirates and Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on 24 September 2024

With Orlando Pirates competing in the CAF Champions League group stages, there's ongoing debate on who is better between Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa.

Makgopa is seemingly head coach Jose Riveiro's first choice up top and perhaps the biggest reason is that he suits his game model, with his big frame and can bring other attackers into the game.

However, a game against Al Ahly showed that the Buccaneers needed a finisher like Tshegofatso Mabasa, who only replaced the former Baroka striker in the latter stages of the game.

Makgopa has received criticism from Pirates supporters, who feel he is not agile enough and lacks bite in the box, especially for these big CAF Champions League group matches.

However, according to former Kaizer Chiefs and Buccaneers striker Pollen Ndlanya, the Bafana Bafana striker needs to be given support and pointed out where he needs to improve.

"Look, I like the structure, the way he shields the ball and in front of goal he's so deadly you know but he still needs to improve as a striker. He does has potential, we need to encourage him," Ndlanya said on Radio 2000's Game On.

"What I like about him is he's got anticipation, he's got vision and I see he has the mentality of scoring goals.

"[But] as a striker you need to be consistent, I don't say he needs to score every week but as a target as for the month as we did I want to score 13 goals (for example) but maybe you score once [in month] and then you disappear, for me it's not healthy," Ndlanya said.

Makgopa has scored six goals with no assists in 16 appearances giants this season while Mabasa has scored four goals and has one assist, in 19 games for the Soweto giants.
