Former Orlando Pirates attacker Joseph Kamwendo says he is pleased with the latest report that his compatriot Gabadinho Mhango will be leaving the Sea Robbers as the club treated the striker 'unfairly'.
Mhango is going to KwaZulu-Natal to join AmaZulu, as confirmed by the club's president Sandile Zungu on SABC Radio on Friday.
"I'm very happy for Gabadinho. This is what I've been calling for. We wanted to see him playing regularly, and going to AmaZulu will give him that opportunity," Kamwendo told the Siya crew.
The Malawi striker had a stellar Africa Cup of Nations campaign in January and was expected to return to the Bucs starting line-up following a fallout with the technical team due to off-field issues.
However, that did not transpire despite his red-hot form, with coach Mandla Ncikazi stating that Mhango must wait for his turn as competition for places is too high while suggesting that the forward's behaviour is why he was frozen out of the team.
"When we talk about Malawian football, he is one of the best players out there, but also he is our superstar so having a superstar that doesn't play regularly, is a big one for Malawi. I believe that once he moves to AmaZulu, we will see him playing his best football. He is a player who doesn't need to stay on the bench," added Kamwendo.
"However, what made Gabadinho not play regularly at Pirates is his attitude and discipline problems, but in football, you'll always have players like that. Even the superstars sometimes behave differently, so it is no different in Gabadinho.
"Maybe the treatment wasn't fair as many players at Pirates have different attitudes. I believe they could have handled the issue of Gabadinho differently because, as a technical panel, you're more like a father to the players. You don't need to show the players that you like this one more than this one or hate this one; that's where the problems come from because if you want to have a winning team and want to have an equally happy dressing home, then you need to treat them in the same way," concluded Kamwendo.
On Sunday, the 27-year-old Mhango scored a brace as Malawi beat Ethiopia 2-1 in an AFCON qualifier at the Bingu National Stadium.
