Orlando Pirates will need a solid defensive structure to build a team to challenge for the league title, according to former defender Abednigo Netshiozwi.
During his time as the left back for the Soweto giants, Netshiozwi tasted success when the Buccaneers won the title under Roy Barreto in 2003.
Netshiozwi, who is now a coach and currently with Buya Msuthu in the third tier league, would like to see the current Bucs team emulate the team of his era by winning trophies.
"During our time we had the best defence and we didn't concede too many goals because of the defensive mistakes. That's why we went on to win the league in 2003 under coach Roy Barreto. We had myself, Lucky (Lekgwathi), Jimmy Tau, and Papi Khomane playing in our defence. Mgababa (Gerald Raphahlela) was also there," said Netshiozwi.
"We did well in defence and were also good in attack when we overlapped. That was a good team. That's why we won the league, it was because of our good defence and our communication was good," he said.
