Orlando Pirates advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout with a 2-0 win over Cape Town Spurs on Friday evening.

Carling Knockout

Result: Orlando Pirates 2-0 Cape Town Spurs

Date: 20 October 2023

Venue: Orlando Stadium

The Buccaneers handed Thembinkosi Lorch is first appearance of the season in the line-up, as one of the three changes that included Olisa Ndah and Evidence Makgopa compared to the team that started in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Spurs had a bright start, as they threatened in the opening exchanges but Pirates came the closest to breaking the deadlock on 24 minutes after Tapelo Xoki's header from a corner came off the base of the post.

The visitors had a good response almost immediately, as Therlo Moosa's side-footed shot in the box missed the bottom corner by a whisker.

The Soweto giants had an injury blow on the half-hour mark after shot-stopper Sipho Chaine could not continue after colliding with Moosa and he was replaced by Melusi Buthelezi, who made his debut.

Jose Riveiro's charges upped the tempo of their game towards the end of the first stanza and were unfortunate not to be 1-0 up just before the half-time break after Nazeer Allie cleared Deon Hotto's shot, that got past goalkeeper Zama Dlamini, off the line.
