Mofokeng became a serious transfer target for the Saudi side, as they look to make a double swoop from the Soweto giants after they already secured the services of Mofokeng's former teammate, Mohau Nkota.
Reports from Al Saudi Web revealed that Al-Ettifaq were seemingly closing in on a move for the 20-year-old, and an official bid of $1,5 million (R26,9 million) was sent to the Sea Robbers to pry Mofokeng away.
The report adds that club president, Khaled Al-Dabal, wants to strengthen the team's ranks with young, quality players in midfield and attack in order to have a competitive squad for next season.
In addition to Nkota, the Saudi Pro League side also signed Egyptian forward Ahmed Hassan Kouka, and it is believed the pursuit of Mofokeng is part of the club's new multi-pronged transfer strategy.
According to Al Saudi Web, The club is hoping to integrate international talents with local players to create a whole package of talent within the squad as The Commandos seek to create communication channels with clubs and players from Africa, Europe and South America.
Acquiring Mofokeng would cement the club's intentions to invest in young players, which will yield greater financial and technical gains in the future.
