That being said, if you look back to the start of this tournament, as the Life Challenge Cup in 1971, there is one clear favourite – the Glamour Boys.
Chiefs and Orlando Pirates between them have won 21 of the 46 finals that have been played over the last four decades, though it is the Amakhosi – with 13 – that reign supreme when it comes to South Africa's most inclusive cup competition.
Despite having been going since the 1970s, only 14 teams have actually managed to win the tournament over the years, with the Nedbank Cup having seen seven different names engraved onto the trophy since Sundowns won it for the first time in 2008.
With two National First Division sides and four Absa Premiership teams in the draw that are yet to win the tournament, there could be a new name etched into history this year.
