There Could Be A New Name On The Nedbank Cup

Nedbank Cup

This weekend will see eight teams from the Premier Soccer League lock horns for a spot in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, and there's a chance of a new name on the trophy.   Watch Bafana's Goals In Zambia   Of the teams remaining in the tournament, only Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have won it in the current format as the Nedbank, with Masandawana the last to win it – back in 2015.   Bloemfontein Celtic have won the competition before, although that was over 30 years ago in 1985 when it was known as the Mainstay Cup. They beat African Wanderers 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy.   With that in mind, Maritzburg United, Ubuntu Cape Town, Free State Stars, Baroka and Cape Town City all have a chance to make history for themselves as they go into this weekend's quarter-finals, knowing that they're just three wins away from the title.    Click here to view the Nedbank Cup fixtures   The current holders, SuperSport United, have won the Nedbank Cup the most amount of times (3), but are out after falling to Celtic via a penalty shootout, and their Tshwane rivals, Sundowns, have the chance to go level with them.   Chiefs are the team that has won the South African FA Cup the most amount of times since it began in 1971, lifting it 13 times as it transitioned from the Life Challenge Cup through to the Nedbank – which they won in 2013 under Stuart Baxter.   Pitso Mosimane was the last South African coach to lift the trophy, and before him, it was Gavin Hunt in 2012. This year Mosimane will be challenged by the likes of Steve Komphela, Fadlu Davids and Benni McCarthy for that honour.   Who do you think will win the Nedbank Cup this year?
